The Rise Of RideController

I would have never guessed back in 2012 during the build of my 1930 Model A that I would end up building a product that would fuse my passion for automobiles and technology. Like all things it starts with a small dream, that grows overtime, that dream grew into something that I desired so badly that I spent 6-12 months / 20 hours a week building the first prototype.

Looking back I believe that God had aligned my life, my skill set, my passion to intersect and give birth to what is RideController today.

The initial prototype was built in 2012 using technology that would only run on Android, that demo can be seen here

Later in 2013, after the release of Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0, and Apple finally opening up their SDK to allow any developers full stack to the BLE stack, I decided to port the project and complete it using iOS.

After completing both the iPhone & iPad versions, I realized I had to build this into a commercial product and sell it! That’s when I single-handedly built the hardware, logo, brand, and name RideController. That process consumed me October 2013 – January 2014. After launching the product, which I had invested so much time in, I didn’t know how to get it out there for people to see. After 6 brutal months, and commenting on peoples pictures on IG to check out my product. I got my first break. Someone who has influence saw RC and loved it, I gave them a partial discount. From August 2014 with 100 Followers on Instagram to over 18,300 today July 2016 as I type this.

With many new products still in the pipe this is just the beginning. This spring I also put together a couple really great marketing videos showcasing the capabilities of RC. Check them out.

If you really feel serious about pushing it mix in some cardio on Tuesday / Thursday but try to stay light on your muscles so you can make the most of your 3 day split.

LIFT heavier RUN harder

Over the last 2-3 years I’ve really changed my life style in regards to eating clean and workout out. Which is a must considering that I work on my laptop 10+ hours a day.  My goal is to be as strong as possible while at the same time maintaining a high level of cardio fitness. Muscle gain and cardio don’t exactly go together but so far the following plan has really allowed me to put on a significant amount of lean muscle mass while scaling back my cardio but still maintaining.

Below is my current regiment. It is a 12 week plan that incorporates all major muscle groups and includes some great cardio. The best part of my plan is that your weekends are free however I usually try to hit up a body pump / core class over the weekend just to get those finishing touches.

Monday – LIFT Heavy #1 – Chest / Back

Tuesday – Run HARDER  – Today you have two options either you RUN or SPIN for at least 45 minutes.

Wednesday – Lift HEAVY #2 – Legs & Arms

Thursday – Run HARDER  – Today you have two options either you RUN or SPIN for at least 45 minutes.

YOUR DONE! Haha just kidding, thats only weeks 1-4 which I just finished. I actually really enjoyed all the workouts in this set. I will post again once I finish weeks 4-8. Don’t forget you have the weekends off but it would be a great idea to throw in a cardio class such as body pump, go for a run, or if your really sore hit up a YOGA class.

One last thing, always remember for most people (like me) working out is 60% eating and only 40% what you do in the gym.

Developer Persona Types

I didn’t always think I had what it took to be a “Developer”.

The main reason for this was because I used to compare myself to others and not against myself. If you tend to do this STOP now. You will forever feel inadequate. There is and always will be someone much better than you at say X skill. This is okay if you have the opportunity,  constantly put yourself around people that are BETTER than you. Just by surrounding yourself with people that know more than you on topics that interest you, you will learn without even trying.

Knowing your type of developer persona will help push yourself professionally and will help those around you learn the best projects to place you in.

I def identify with being the Mort Persona “Mort, the opportunistic developer, likes to create quick-working solutions for immediate problems. He focuses on productivity and learns as needed.” because I realize this is how I operate I try to put myself in projects / start projects that push myself just outside my current skill set, so I will continue to develop professionally.

There you have it,  the take away is this, anyone through hard work and perseverance can build the skills to become a DEVELOPER.

31 Before 31

Well its 2014 and you know what that means? Its time to MAKE GOALS, and by goals I mean you better be Reaching Farther Than You Think You Can.

I have to admit I haven’t always been the goal setting type of guy. I’d say this didn’t really develop until after I graduated from Mizzou and started working for a few months. I kinda had one of those what now moments. I felt lost and confused. I had done what you were suppose to do, I worked hard I got through and I graduated. Now what or so I thought. Well after spinning around and aimlessly walking in different directions I realized I needed a map, I needed direction, something to point this rocket ship towards,  being the high energy person I am, I was like a nuclear reactor with no controls. If your not moving forward (like everyone says) your prolly moving backwards. That is when I started to make a list of goals for each year, fitness goals, financial goals,  personal goals, and  spiritual goals. Now honestly many times I have failed and yes I failed in 2013 on many fronts, but overall shooting for these things has made me a much better person and pushed me to constantly invest in my mind. The most valuable thing any of us have.

Its 2014 today!! and its time to branch out (I still have many yearly goals and those aren’t complete yet) but this year I want to spice it up a little, I want to project this roadmap into writing, publish it somewhere, I can track, I can look back at and say hey here’s what I wanted to do and here’s what I did. Cannot wait to just live every moment being fully alive getting after this list look out July 30th 2017 I’m gettin after it!

1. Run A Full Marathon (failed in 2013, injury killed progress)

2. Build A Custom Car With Over 750RWHP Dyno Sheet To Prove

3. Stop Drinking Diet Coke (this might be the hardest of them all hahaha) Quit 1/1/2016 – Brazil Trip Helped  – No DK in Brazil haha

4. Pay Of Student Loans

5. Become a better snowboarder 1+ months living near mountains.

6. Never go over 160lbs even with muscle. Currently at 159 2/11/2016

7. Travel To The East Coast (NY NY & DC)

8. Run A Sub 5:10 Mile

9. Swim over a mile.

10. Create, Build, and market a product that people desire and need. (RideController!) Currently has 14.6k Followers On IG 2/11/2016

11. Become a mentor for a young person Church or Boys / Girls Club

12. Auto Cross / Drift a vehicle I have. Build a respectable track beast. Similar to this RX7 Monster (SC300!!)

13. Take my mom and siblings to the beach for a week.

14. Make a piece of art, something decent enough to hang on the wall that I won’t be embarrassed about.

15. Climb Mt Rainier 14,411 feet with an over 9,000 feet of elevation gain. One of the largest most glaciated mountains in North America, often called the foot step to the Himalayan’s.

16. Learn a 2nd Language – Suggestion Spanish (took in High School). Become semi-fluent.

17. Take A Formal Welding Class

18. Reach out professional and built a better community of people and connections in regards to Software Development / Professional Development.

19. Build an additional relationship with someone that bonds over the interest in Automotive Performance, help them with their next automotive endeavor, hopefully their drift – autocross project. DONE – Met Elliot, Justin, Mike & Caleb K.

20. Teach someone to do something, lose weight? How to weld? Do it till the point that they are very proficient!

21. Maintain a blog where you post stuff about your life, fitness, cars, and goals. And how to accomplish them. DONE (www.themiller.me)

22. Build a work remote plan with employer. 70% Home 30% Remote

23. Learn How To Ball Room Dance / Formal Dance. (Tango, Classic, Salsa)

24. Stay Abroad for 30+ Days. Almost Current Max Is 21 Days. 🙁

25. Produce a Short Automotive Related Film that gets 10,000 views on YouTube. Using multiple cameras and or GoPro’s via Gyro Copter.

26. Visit These 5 Major Continents

I have been aggressively developing RideController, when not working my awesome day job @ Foliotek Inc. This iOS7 app was first built out as a proof of concept using Android on a HP Touchpad via my previous posts. It has since developed into a full blown iOS7 app and runs using Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0. I have been aggressively working to get this app complete so I can release it January 2014.
